Slightly Mad

Queen unsurprisingly have a song that explains the way I feel right now: I’m going slightly Mad:

Im one card short of a full deck
Im not quite the shilling
One wave short of a shipwreck
Im not my usual top billing
Im coming down with a fever
Im really out to sea
This kettle is boiling over
I think Im a banana tree
Oh dear

Im going slightly mad
Im going slightly mad
It finally happened – happened
It finally happened – uh huh
It finally happened
Im slightly mad
Oh dear

I want to formally launch the scietific significant desease called “keyboard madness” which I am suffering from. The affliction occurrs after too much type in front of a keyboard and leads to headaches, frustration, desire to shout profanity out loud and irrational anger. Most sufferers are pale and have a dazed expression. As a bonus some may have a repetitive strain injury known sometimes as mouse arm.

By removing them slowly, gently but firmly from their keyboards and forcing them out into the outside world, and making sure they have no digital devices with them – recovery is rapid and often complete. However patients relapse often and rapidly once they are again in the proximity of a keyboard.

That's just sick

Via Neatorama came a small report about the artist Wim Delvoye who has done lots of cool stuff. The towards the end of the article was this:

Wim is a vegetarian, but he has a pig/art farm outside of Beijing in China. He’s not thinking of bacon, however – Wim has other plans for his swine: he tattoos them! (He said that the pigs have better, longer lives than those raised for food).

I realise that this may make statements about the consumer society and the way in which we treat animals but I still really dislike the fact that the man tattoos animals. This, to me, is another example of an artist using animals to create “shock value” in order to move the jaded art scene into a reaction. It still does not make it art not does it make it right. And what the hell was the monoumentaly stupid comment that the pigs were happy and that he was a vegetarian about?

That an animal is more happy than another animal (how is this measured?) does not make abusing it a legitimate act. The fact that the artist refuses to eat meat does not legitimize his torment of animals. Just sick. As it happens it also may be pointless from a novelty point of view since he is not the first artist to tattoo pigs.

Why should work like this be dignified with the name art – isn’t it just animal abuse on a more premedited and cruel scale?

Tastless product

A business selling high heels for children under 6 months? This is the kind of thing that makes you sit up and pay attention. What were they thinking about when they designed it? How did the financiers motivate their investment? What do the customers think they are doing when they buy this “cute” thing? Buying high heel shoes – even toy shoes for children is terrible.

Extremely funny, completely soft shoes for babies
0-6 months designed to look like high heels
Not intended for walking (heel will collapse with weight).
Not intended to harm children in any way.

Not harm the children? I don’t think so. This is truely a tastless product…

Ignorant waste

OK so energy politics is not my forte but this is too interesting not to bring up. Sweden generates half of their electricity from nuclear power. In the production of nuclear energy water is used…

…to extract the extra heat from nuclear power stations (cooling water). It is not at all radioactive and it could be very easily be channelled into Sweden’s extensive district-heating grid. But no – this water is not even used to provide showers in the nuclear facility. Instead it is poured into the sea, possibly harming sea life and creating lovely clouds of expensive steam.

According to Paddy K this hot water accounts for one-third of all the energy (energy not electricity) produced in Sweden.

If Paddy is right about what he writes then this ignorant waste needs to be changed…

Banging head against virtual wall

According to runners mythology there comes a time in a marathon when the runners hit “the wall” it is apparently a place when all the bodies energy simply dries up and the runner is left to finish on sheer will-power alone.

Today I hit the wall early at work. Have been working inefficiently on sheer will-power and I am now going home. This is totally useless information to most of you – like everything else on the web I suppose but I decided that I would feel much better if I moaned about this here. I didn’t work very well so I am still going home.

Just to make sure that this downer of mine does not spread to you here is a random cute puppy picture to cheer us all up.

Praying for petrol

If you are religious it may seem like a natural act to ask an almighty being to lower the price of petrol. You might think that such a being would have other things to do than to ensure that people can drive big cars at an affordable rate…

From SFGate:

Twyman – a community organizer, church choir director and public relations consultant from the Washington, D.C., suburbs – staged a pray-in at a San Francisco Chevron station on Friday, asking God for cheaper gas. He did the same thing in the nation’s Capitol on Wednesday, with volunteers from a soup kitchen joining in. Today he will lead members of an Oakland church in prayer.

I guess asking for world peace was too much of a hassle? It is not amazing to me that people believe (they are wrong but that’s another issue) but it is amazing to think that they would ask their god for things like this.

Breaking a mirror

Yesterday I managed to break a medium sized mirror that is meant to hang in my hallway – no I am not superstitious. What is really annoying about this is that I need to go and buy a replacement mirror, it’s not difficult but it does entail a trip to Ikea.

The idea that breaking mirrors means bad luck comes from the Romans, who were among the first to make mirrors. They believed that somehow when looking in the mirror you saw a part of yourself, part of your soul – not only a reflection. This also explains why vampires don’t have reflections in mirrors since they have no souls.

And if you broke the mirror then parts of you would be trapped in the shards. The reason it was seven years of bad luck lies in the belief that the soul regenerates every seven years.

Well I am not superstitious but I still need to get a ride to Ikea.

The concept of property (whose bike is it anyway?)

Property is not an absolute concept. The concept of what property means changes both in time and culture. Different groups and sub-groups value their own property and the property of others. Naturally this makes the definition of property difficult. Roman (Justinian) Law defined property as the right to use and abuse a thing, within the limits of the law (ius utendi et abutendi re sua, quatenus iuris ratio patitur).

That is a formalistic definition since it requires limitations to be set within the law. But if we replace the law with the limits set by society then the definition is more fluid but harder to limit.

In recent time the discussion of property has been discussed in relation to the legal, ethical and economic discussions on file sharing. A fundamental part of this discussion has been on the basic idea of digital property and whether copying digital products should be a wrongful act – this is not resolved yet with different subgroups still arguing their standpoints using law and technology to prove their point.

All this is good and well but today I got a more practical lesson in the meaning of property within different social sub-groups.

While browsing in a clothes shop my friends locked bike was stolen just outside the store. My less attractive unlocked bike was left behind. Fortunately we searched the area and found the bike. The thief had lifted the bike and hid it in a nearby ally – apparently planning to come back later to remove the lock.

Part of the experience of living in Göteborg is getting your bike stolen. Most of us have lost more than one. Some people argue that they have lost so many bikes that they actually deserve to “borrow” (a.k.a. steal) a bike when they need one. This means that there is an erosion of the concept of property in relation to bikes.

I know that this is a silly argument but the bike thing really pissed me off.
